Issue 02 of Au Courant Magazine presents a modern and understated mix of stories on creative people, places, and spaces.
The cover story gives an exclusive look into Dutch architect & furniture designer GERRIT RIETVELD's rarely viewed 'Model Home' in Utrecht alongside a discussion with CENTRAAL MUSEUM UTRECHT director, Edwin Jacobs on modernism, De STIJL and its proponents.
Elsewhere, Issue 02 visits the 'Light and Space' resin sculptor PETER ALEXANDER at his Los Angeles studio; exhibition curator Martijn van Nieuwenhuyzen at the STEDELIJK comments on the museum's ISA GENZKEN's retrospective; Belgian MATS ROMBAUT opens up on the challenges of designing sustainable luxury footwear; tropical modernism is explored at the BACOLET BEACH CLUB on Tobago; photographer NADIA HUGGINS explores the boundaries of her native island, St. Vincent and the Grenadines; the founders of ASTIER DE VILLATTE wax poetic on the maison's scenting rituals; and LA GARCONNE founder Kris Kim shares the Manhattan boutique's understated outlook.
The issue also comes with a pull-out supplement on the raw energy of 1970s Trinidad Carnival by the late photographer NICK DE WOLF.
Release Date: Aug 08 2016.
Luminous, dreamlike, and sensual, Peter Alexander's oeuvre as a painter and sculptor is inextricably linked to California, and to the Southern California landscape, at that. A founding member of the Light and Space art school that emerged from Los Angeles in the 1960s, Alexander's minimalist work is at once structured and soft. Training and earlier work as an architect informed his geometric resin objects, but it is the ethereal, almost surreal and unfiltered, sensorial elements of the West Coast that features alluringly across his entire body of work.
Alexander, now in his seventies but still working on his angular resin sculptures and astoundingly firm yet jelly-like bars, graciously opened his studio doors in Santa Monica, CA for a casual tour of his works and conversation on the process that led him to develop his iconic forms alongside the other Light and Space artists from Larry Bell and Craig Kaufmann to Ron Cooper and James Turrell.
Above, an excerpt from our talks for the first episode of the Au Courant Audio Diary, along with a selection of images from the full feature on Peter Alexander as featured inside the second issue of Au Courant Magazine, now available for preorder.
